A survey conducted by Akamai suggests that 47% of web users expect a site to load in 2 seconds or less, and 40% generally leave a site that hasn’t loaded within 3 seconds. 64% of web shoppers who have trouble with a web sites performance say they would just purchase from another store in future. This could mean a massive loss in sales over a few seconds in loading time.
Google And Load Time
Google stumbled onto some interesting information regarding load time. Google Vice President Marissa Mayer asked web surfers – would you rather see 10 or 30 results for your Google search? The users agreed that 30 results per page sounded like a good idea. Google implemented it on some results pages.
Interestingly the pages that displayed 30 results had a 20% reduction in traffic to them. Google tested the loading difference between the 10 and 30 results pages and found that it was just half a second.
